Welcome!

We're glad you found us.

You know, women have been finding Newcomers & Friends of Lexington for over 50 years. I talked recently with some of our members who have been with the club for over three decades. Marlene James is one of those members. She came to Lexington the way many of us have — a job transfer. Her introduction to the club? A friend who had already made the transfer to Lexington and found Newcomers. Marlene said she attended a Welcome Coffee held in a member’s home, enjoyed meeting the ladies and joined that day. She has been an active member ever since.

Over the last 35 years, she and Newcomers have grown older together. The early 90s saw the club with more than 400 members, with women in their late 20’s to 40’s. The focus was on playdates and babysitting. “I only had three mornings a week free. I jumped in and did the craft, sewing and canasta groups,” says Marlene. She met many wonderful people, including some who became her closest friends. Marlene has never been one to sit by and let others do the work; she has led almost every activity group in Newcomers and was president from 2012-2014.

It's the friends she’s made that have kept her in the club and made her a mighty ambassador for the group. On a personal note, some 30 years after Marlene was introduced to the club, she found herself in a familiar role. She met my husband and me at the club’s Sunday brunch group three years ago and immediately made us feel welcome. She introduced us, not only to the fun of Newcomers, but to the entire Bluegrass region.

On December 10 at our club holiday luncheon, we’ll honor Marlene and many other members like her as we begin our 50-year celebration.  Here’s to 50 more years, looking good Newcomers & Friends of Lexington!

This has been a very busy time for the club. We were one of the sponsors of the Civic Lex screening of the documentary “Join or Die” and met hundreds of community members who had come together to learn more about connecting with their community. CivicLex is now developing a club directory for Lexington, which can be accessed from civiclex.org.

Our club and its activity groups have been working hard for the last month to gather food bags to supplement food insecure students at the University Kentucky during the holiday break. The club goal is to donate 50 holiday food bags to the Big Blue Food Pantry. The final push for this event will be at the club luncheon in December.

After a very successful Meet & Greet in Nicholasville in October, the club is hosting a gathering in Versailles on December 16 — join us!

Enjoy the most wonderful time of the year!

Brenda,

Newcomers & Friends of Lexington President
